Up until I updated to Yosemite, formatting negative numbers with parentheses appeared in the drop down menu, i.e., right click to get format cells, click number tab on top, click number on left.

People suggest adding custom number format to add the parentheses, but you have to do that separately on each spreadsheet you open, which is hardly ideal.

If you open a spreadsheet that has numbers formatted the way you want, you can use the format painter to copy that format to other cells.

I was having the same problem when I added Excel for Windows in a parallels virtual machine on the same Mac, but fortunately, I was able to correct it in control panel under the language and region settings.

The language and regions setting on Apple system preferences, doesnt give you any option for formatting negative numbers.

My region settings are set properly for United States so that isnt the problem.

What a pain. One bit of good news: I found that in these older spreadsheets the code for Accounting and Parentheses formatting is in the Custom dropdown list.

It is easily recognizable and can be used to quickly setup Accounting and Parentheses formatting when adding a new worksheet.
